The Green Party is a growing electoral force.
- This year we are standing 985 candidates for district, borough and metropolitan councils, half as many again as in the last directly comparable set of elections four years ago.
- 32 of these are in Leicester.
- We are also fielding candidates for over half the 307 councils with elections, again a significant increase compared with 1999.
Voting for these councils takes place in sub-divisions called wards.
Which Ward am I in?
To find out what Ward you are in you can:
- click here. (N.B. The details on this Government website may not have been fully updated to reflect Leicester's ward changes.)
- examine your polling card from the Council
- or ring the Council's electoral services department on (0116) 299 5960.
Do I have a Green candidate to Vote for?
You can check whether or not there are Green candidates to vote for in your ward by clicking here.
If your Leicester ward is not listed, then there are no Green candidates standing in it. If so, please consider joining us and helping to rectify that at the next election.
Voters often ask us whether they can go and vote in another ward where there is a Green candidate. The answer is No, you can only vote in the ward for which you are registered as an elector.
Using your Votes in Wards with more then one Seat
- You will have as many votes as there are seats.
- You do not have to cast all your votes for the same party.
- But we would urge you to vote for all of the Green candidates in your ward. Splitting your vote may weaken the chances of a Green candidate getting elected.
- Also, where we get two or more candidates elected, they have 'official group' status which gives them much more influence on the Council - and they can be sure of getting motions seconded, so that Green concerns have to be debated in the Council chamber. This gives them a higher profile and prevents the other parties from brushing them under the carpet.
- You do not have to use all of your votes. If the Green Party is standing fewer candidates than there are seats up for election in your Ward, they will have the best chance of election if you vote only for them.
- If you normally support another party and want to continue doing so, but nevertheless believe that the Green Party's point of view should be heard on the Council, please consider giving us one (or two) of your votes. Our leaflets and other promotional work may have indicated which of the Green candidates we would most like you to vote for if you only feel able to give us one (or two) of your votes at this time. By focusing such votes on one (or two) candidates, we have a greater chance of getting at least one Green elected.
