First-ever Greens elected to Leicester Council

History has been made. For the first time in living memory, Leicester has elected outcillors from outside the three main parties. In Castle Ward, the Green Party's Matt Follett topped the poll with 1319 votes and the Green Party's Phil Gordon came second with 988.

Matt Follett said: "I'm absolutely delighted that people in Castle have given such a vindication of the policies we put forward. Our positive style of campaigning has paid off. We went out on the doorsteps and met people and spoke to them - and people responded. This result is a tribute to the people of Castle, who have dared to venture outside the political mainstream, and above all to Bob Ball, the candidate who came so close in 2003. He set the foundations of this victory, and his advice and planning helped to ensure it."

Phil GordonPhil Gordon said: "What has pleased me most is that we've been able to bring a smile back into politics. There is far too much cynicism. The people in Castle believed we could make a difference, and it is now up to us to satisfy the expectations we have raised."

Promoted by Leicester Green Party at 89a Winchester Avenue, Leicester LE3 1AY
