Matt Follett tests the death trap Green Party candidate tests ''death trap"

May 2 2005

Green Party Candidate Matt Follett today tested a claim by many local people that anyone trying to cycle from Nelson Mandela Park away from the city centre is entering a death trap.

Mr Follett, the candidate for Leicester South, has reacted angrily to claims over the city’s environment by Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates.

He said: “To hear Peter Soulsby and Parmjit Gill talk about what they have done environmentally for the city is enough to make me laugh out loud. Any cyclist in Leicester South knows that if you want to get from Nelson Mandela Park to Morrison supermarket at peak traffic time you are taking your life in your hands.”

He continued: “Traffic and highways is one of the areas that local council can impact on, and Parmjit Gill did absolutely nothing during the failed two years that Lib Dems were in charge, just as he has done nothing as an MP. You take your life in your hands cycling on this stretch of road - and there is no legal alternative route - so people are being forced to risk life and limb or break the law. Only the Green Party takes city cycling seriously.”
